Photoshoot RECAP: Jordyn in the SNOW!

Jan 28, 2009 by     5 Comments    Posted under: Lighting Setups, Photoshoot Recap

After four years of waiting, I finally see a proper snow storm once again.   Well not really a snow storm, just 2-3 inches, but enough to get me excited.  After replying emails all day holed up in my little room, I took a peek outside and was surprised by such glorious whiteness of the land and it kept on falling as well.   As any photographer should, I dropped everything, phoned up Jordyn to check if she was free and interested in shooting in the snow and cold, and she said yes!

So within 90 minutes, I had my gear in the boot and  was scraping ice off the windshield getting ready to go.  I have to attribute a bit of my quick preparation to Nikon’s superb battery charger for my D2x.  I had been shooting the day before and had only 30% batt left.  It took the charger roughly 40minutes to charge the battery to 90% full.  AMAZING.

Anyways, I had always wanted to shoot with a model in front of snow laden tree branches.  So the obvious location with lots of trees was the Great Falls National Park with secluded woods and snow everywhere.   Enough blabbering, here are some photos from the day, we only shot for 1.5 hours (that’s including getting in and out of the car to warm up).  I’ll explain the rest of the shoot through captions.

I’m drawn to hair movement like a moth to a blue light. I love moving hair…hope I’m not the only one out there. Brave Jordyn kept on spinning her head while I smashed the shutter down at 5fps. This was my favourite from all the hair movement shots. It’s partly inspired by a shot by Nick a while back.

Jordyn braving the cold with just a hoody.

This is one of the last shots of the day. By then it had stopped snowing, so I cheated. Threw a handful of snow up in the air with one hand and took the photo with another. Hence not many perfectly sharp photos, but still usable. And this photo was partly inspired by a recent flickr phenomenon by Niall.

Wanted a bit of a lost in the woods look or exploring the woods look.

My favourite from the shoot.

If you were wondering…all were taken in natural light. As optimistic as I was by taking my flashes and reflector, there simply was no need. The snow covered ground provided a perfect reflector and the grey clouds, a perfect diffuser. Plus it was too cold for me to bother with lighting stuff anyways.

  • I inspired a photo? Cool!

Jordyn looks stunning in these, btw. Do I recognise her from a previous shoot you did? Much more stylised, ‘high fashion’ stuff?

  • Superb battery charger my arse! Canon have used the same battery charger ever since I got my 10D and it charges from empty to full in 1hr flat, exactly the same for the 40D. I can then get between 500-1000 shots out of one charge. Nothing special bout the D2x’s.

    :P

Awesome shoot btw, and Jordyn’s got an amazing look for it.

  • Jamie- unlike puny 10D/40D batteries, nikon uses an 11.1 V 1900 mAh battery. :p Physically, it’s about twice the size of the canon counterparts. Took 400 photos today and only took the battery down from full to 78%. cheers for the comments on the shoot, any opinions on the processing?

  • Nick- yup, jordyn had modeled in the maroon dress and purple shirt before. this shoot was more impromptu

  • I’d just like to say how brilliant these photos are. Your range of shots capture the duality of a snowy day – the harshness of nature VS a white playground. I realise you had a difficult task with the weather conditions in terms of practicialities (it didn’t snow when you needed it to, and the model looks a bit cold at times) but you have coped with this issue well. Once again, a collection of professional and impressive shots.
