RECAP: Katelin-MOTION
As promised…here are more of Katelin from our brief 20 minute photoshoot this Tuesday in the cold. I’m dubbing these as “ghost motion” for obvious reasons, no photoshop magic applied…rear sync flashes. Technical shooting stuff at end of blog. Without further ado…here they are:
racing against herself
jumping and leaping with 4 inchers!
bigger ghost/spirit
casual stroll
These were all shot with two Nikon speedlights rear syncing (Sb800 on camera and Sb900 as slave in an octobox).
*Rear sync is when the flash is fired when the curtain closes, rather than when the curtain opens as with a normal flash.
The octobox was placed to the right of the camera in front of the model. I was panning and tracking Katelin and she was walking and running. There was also a bit of zoom blur. All this add together for this final effect.
Should be planning another shoot with Katelin in the upcoming couple weeks. More to come.

I’m interested you chose the third shot to post to the PhotoSoc group, as for me the 2nd is far and away the strongest. I think it’s the only one where the interesting flash effect really works compositionally (whatever that may mean exactly). Perhaps it’s how well the blur works with each particular pose, but I don’t reckon the others are nearly as strong. The third in particular seems really awkward.
Really like the 2nd one though. Much stronger body shape and I like the fact we can see her eyes. It’s more graceful, while one & three seem a touch ungainly (which I’m sure she is not in the least).
D’you know any dancers in the area?
I agree. Photo-wise, i like the 4th the best. Effect wise I like the first the best. I put the third one in the photosoc thing mainly because it was the one with the easiest processing…(there was a big chunk of photoshopping in number 2…see if you can tell)
Hmmm… Removed an object of some sort from low down on the right-hand edge?
