Snaps from Trip
I went on a three week long roadtrip in April, driving all the way down to Miami, then to the Keys, through the Everglades towards Tampa and all the way back up to DC through the Shenadoah National Park. I brought my camera along for the trip and a couple flashes for some quick photoshoots if I get a little bit of inspiration. Here is just a very small selection from the trip.

This first one was taken in Long Key State Park in the Florida keys. One of the most gorgeous national parks with soft natural white sand beach and all kinds of little sea creatures scuttling around. After a short stroll on the beach, we were able to find this bleached white tree on the edge of the beach. Such a gorgeous sight.

Somtimes the camera stays in the car all day during the trip and doesn’t get pulled out until we rest at the hotel, the venue for the next few pics.

The pic above and the one below would’ve been easy had I a softbox/umbrella and a lightstand. Unfortunately, when you are on the go, you have to forgo such luxuries. In this case I had a single SB-800 perched on a towel rack to camera left. Even with the diffuser, the light was too harsh, so I hang a big white paper shopping bag in front of it to act as a diffuser…it worked out surprisingly well. Everything was triggered by pocket wizards.

As we switched hotels, my ‘studio’ changed. In this case, I was shooting to balance the flash lighting with the ambient desk lamp. When shooting with a combination of ambient and flash lighting, the trick is to shoot with ambient lighting only first and figure out how much ambient lighting you require, dial in your settings. Then whip out the flash and tweak the flash power to balance everything out. As you can probably see in the reflection, I used a white lampshade and also a white dress to soften/flag the light.

This last shot was taken in Shenadoah National park, natural sunset lighting, just a bit of photoshop to bring out the colours…brave model on heels and next to a cliff!
There should be another big batch of photos coming within the week. watch this space.
