Post Processing Workflow

Jul 20, 2010 by     6 Comments    Posted under: Retouching

Sorry I’ve been away for so long…just been through a big move, will blog about it soon.  But in the meantime, I’ve been doing a lot of processing recently and finally realised I did not have a strict processing workflow written done.  I’ve been doing everything from memory and would occasionally miss out a step here or there.   So I’ve finally decided to write it down and paste it next to my screen.  So here it is.  Don’t know how helpful it is to you…but LR=lightroom changes, then PS=photoshop changes.  Feel free to ask questions on specific steps.

  • Hey! Is there a reason that you do sharpening in LR rather than PS? Also, what does Unsharpen M mean? Thanks–love all the advice you put on your blog!

  • hey Michele, for sharpening, I shoot RAW which means no in camera sharpening is applied, so first step in LR is essentially ‘sensor sharpening’, it’s the preliminary sharpening to gain back some of the detail which may be lost through the lack of in camera process.

Unsharpen M= unsharpen mask…has similar effect as ‘clarity’ in LR

thanks for the questions…keep them coming

  • Hey Bo… just gonna learn you on your own site :P

Clarity increases local contrast – particularly in the midtones. Its not sharpening exactly as the effects are much more widespread. Its more like adding a High Pass filter layer in PS blended using say soft light.

Unsharp Mask tackles the hardness of edges, essentially by increasing local contrast, but only in a very very tight area along the edge – essentially ‘deblurring’ edges. Clarity is a far more general adjustment and is far more like a contrast increasing curve that has more effect in areas that have higher contrast already.

  • I would love to see a video of a full post processing workflow please!

  • Hi Devin,

Thanks for the input. As each photo require slightly different post processing method and a lot of different steps, I am trying to break the whole process down to individual steps which you can view in the retouching videos: http://www.boandbro.com/blog/category/retouching/totw/

So I’m hoping these short videos will build up to the whole editing process.

    Thanks
