Girl in the Model Project

So I’ve decided to start a new photo project.   Having been working on the blog light setups and giving lighting and fashion workshops, I have felt a little bewildered by the techie side of photography.  Each photoshoot seemed to be focused more on the precision of the makeup, the positioning of the the shadows, the catch lights, the sleekness of the hair, the compatibility of the wardrobe, the angle of the poses and many more manufactured aspects of the photo.  The models for my shoots oftentimes snap into a fashion posing zone once they are placed under the lights and in front of the camera.  Everything felt more like a production than anything else.

In the new project titled “Girl in the Model,”  I want to strip away all the industry ‘fluff’ and become more organic in the photographs.  The shoot aims to be lot more casual and fun, capturing the real girl in the model rather than a fierce, seductive, melancholy model the industry expects.  The photos will be blurry, grainy and poorly lit.   The wardrobe will be whatever the girls came in.   The makeup will be non existent.  The hair is going to be messy and all over the place.  But that’s the point…it’s about the girl, nothing else.   So enough of the talk…here are some early tests with the new project.

Introducing Lisa:

In case you were wondering, to keep with the organic theme…there is no photoshop/retouching…just simple black and white conversion.

More to come soon

  • Greetings Bo,

I love your new project because photo web sites are full of over processed Photoshop images. It’s refreshing to get back to the “old school” style; Photographer + model = Stunning photographs. I enjoy watching you grow on your web site. Keep up the Great work.

    Blessings, Gregory

  • Thanks greg, you read my mind precisely

  • Hi Bo, great idea. It’s good to go back to the routes. Many of the wonderful photographers we all respect kept things very simple like this and got amazing photos from it. Keep them coming!

  • Thanks Charlie
