A couple quick ones with Aaron

I shot with Aaron again today with Warren doing the makeup/hair and Michael on the styling. We did a couple different looks, but first here are a couple headshots we did in the end.

Working with studio lights I’m very used to shooting at f/8 or higher, sometimes this is more or less forced. It is impossible to shoot at f/2.5 with studio lights, unless your iso can go down to 50 or 25, or your light is highly diffused, but end of the day there is just too much power. So to achieve this thin DOF to make it look as if Aaron is coming out of the darkness, I shot with the modeling light of the Alienbee with a beauty dish gridded. This was shot at iso 400 and f/2.5 on my 35mm (this is becoming my go to lens now).

Photoshoot RECAP: Terra

I don’t shoot beauty often and that’s an area I’m always looking to collaborate and build on. Terra was a concept I had came up with back in April. I was inspired by I believe a Gucci jewelry ad campaign which had bracelets sitting in a bed of scrap metal. So essentially what if we have the model coming out of rocks. Warren played along with my idea and here is what I shot with some fantastic models. Oxana (One Management), you can also see my other work with Oxana here, Jenny (THE), and Jackie (THE). The concept or underlying story is that the model is one with nature and work with various stone qualities. Since we wanted the natural look, we kept the makeup very simple and light. This also applied for the lighting with just a simple big softbox.

The challenge of this concept is actually the execution of the setup. In order to get the rocks to the same level as the front of the face, I had to build a mold for the model to lay her head in with just a thin layer of rocks above.

Jane, my intern helped me place the rocks in the shots so that rocks lay softly on the model.

Quick shoot in the Sun

So as global warming has it, the DC area has gone through 3ft blizzards and now we’ve had a couple days in 93 degree (33 C) weather. So in the sun i had the fortune to go out and conduct my first on location shoot of the year with Natalie, a local Ukranian model. Warren did the makeup and Natalie pulled together her own wardrobe and chose the locations. We shot at the Hillwood museum and also under a bridge in Cleveland park area. Here are a couple quick snaps.

Loudon Magazine

So things are coming together slowly. This is kind of unexpected. I did a shoot with Missy (Q models-nyc) a while back using jewelry provided by Orly. At first this was just a fun portfolio shoot. Then a couple of photos got picked up by ‘The Business of Professional Modeling”. And now a couple of them appear in the spring issue of the Loudon Magazine. Check it out below.

Photoshoot: Clouds

Lately I’ve been doing more editorial work, either for a model’s portfolio, or for magazine submissions.

Dana and I came up with this story in the Sunflower Restaurant, a vegan place in DC. The concept was for a swimsuit shoot with very playful clouds dangling from the ceiling. I loved the contrast between the childish cartoony style and a sexy swimsuit.

The giant lollipops were a last minute addition that worked so well with the colorful makeup.

The models were Sophia and Emoni. Neither of them are signed with agencies yet, but they should be soon! Sophia is heading up to New York once she graduates and though Emoni is 14, her mom has been sending her photos to all of the agencies with very good responses.

Dana Delaney did the makeup, Warren did the hair styling, and Walter did the very last minute wardrobe.

Photoshoot: Aaron

As many of you know and probably have seen throughout my blog, I don’t shoot many male models. I have been expanding my portfolio and Aaron approached me during the process. Aaron is signed with Models Inc. in DC, now signed with Forever Young Agency in NYC.

Warren came on board for the makeup, and Walter did the styling.

The first look was dramatic and sleek with a long trench coat, quite like Tom Ford ads.

With male models it is important to show off the physique, so for the second look we went more high fashion with an open shirt.

I find that with male models you are limited with poses. It is important for the model to not look too feminine. It proves to be an interesting challenge, though.

Photoshoot: Angela with Warren

Ever so often, I look back at my photography and question where I am developing with my photography and try to figure out where I want to go. This often last a week or so and is rather depressing as I try to reflect what I’ve done and blindly search for the guiding light of where I need to develop. Then it occurs to me…the final solution…keep on shooting. As a photographer I think everyone should constantly keep shooting and never slow down. As you shoot, you will learn new things and new opportunities will develop.

It was during one of my slow periods that I decided to look through the DC area for new models and scout for hot undiscovered talents. This is when I came across Angela.

Angela has a very unique face and that’s what we often look for when we look for a new model. Warren and I partnered up for a beauty story. We started with very simple things at first but the ideas and concepts simply developed and we went all out for some fun crazy drastic makeup and beauty shoot ideas. Warren made a beauty grid on Angela’s face using a stencil and then Warren brought a piece of gridded metal which made for a gorgeous contrast with the softness of Angela’s features.

As for the lighting, these were taken with a simple beauty dish to camera high right with a AB800 with small umbrella camera left low and to the left of the model a white board to fill in the shadows. Enjoy the pics.

Photoshoot RECAP: Anca

Just to catch up with past blogs/ photoshoots. It’s been a while, here is a shoot you’ve probably seen all the photos of, but here is the post for it. This shoot I worked with Warren, Walter and Anca, a great local model, another european beauty in the DC area. I essentially wanted to shoot outdoors on-location to capture moving lights, the hustle and bustle of the city. I initially chose to shoot in Georgetown, but having driven through Georgetown at night, there isn’t much in terms of interesting lighting such as neons. Hence we decided to change the venue and shoot in Chinatown. We prepped in DC Photo Coop, a great local studio.

Many people have questioned the technique of the photos. All the light streaks are in the original photograph, none of the lights were photoshopped in. This is simple shutter drag. I was moving the camera while composing the photograph. Moving the camera quickly with a shutterspeed around 1/15 a sec captures the light dragging. Then you capture the model using a brighter light source. In this particular case, this was done with a SB900 mounted on a monopod bouncing with an umbrella. We were moving constantly capturing different parts of Chinatown to get the various sceneries.

One thing to point out is that it is useful on every shoot to let everyone know of the concept in mind. For instance, with this concept it’s important to get motion and reflections. Because there was so much motion in the photograph, it was important to get the big flowy hair which Warren did a fabulous job on. (If Anca had been wearing a bun, it would’ve gotten lost in the photograph.)

Now also becaouse of the dark mood of things, Anca would’ve been lost in the bright colourful scenery if she was wearing dark matte clothing. So instead we chose very reflective clothing as the sequine dress which captures everything so well. Also all the tops in these photos were provided by another local talent, Viola Ricci in Baltimore.
